English

Abstract
Future hope in Iran—particularly among Generation Z adolescents, as the future builders of society—is a complex, multidimensional social issue. However, existing studies predominantly adopt a partial and linear perspective toward this phenomenon. Adopting a comprehensive, systemic approach, the present study seeks to identify and conduct a structural analysis of the network of factors influencing adolescents’ future hope. In total, 91 influencing factors were identified through a systematic review of 78 articles (selected using the PRISMA framework), interviews with 17 experts in sociology, psychology, and education, and interviews with 25 Generation Z adolescents (born in the second half of the 2000s) in the urban context of Mashhad. Findings from mapping direct and indirect influence–dependence relationships using structural analysis through the MICMAC method revealed that future hope emerges within a complex, multi-level causal system. The results indicated that policy-making, social anomie, and economic instability possess the highest driving power and lowest dependency, functioning as key drivers shaping the state of future hope among Generation Z adolescents. Conversely, variables such as mental health, sense of self-worth, and social vitality showed the highest dependency, acting as the system’s final outcomes. Moreover, factors such as media lifeworld, social cohesion, social transformations, and empowerment of adolescent agency serve as intermediary links that mediate the transmission of influence between macro-structures and individual/social outcomes. This model demonstrates that enhancing adolescents’ future hope requires reforming macro-level policy structures, reducing socio-economic disorder, and strengthening social and media bonds. The findings emphasize the necessity of policy and cultural interventions at macro- and meso-levels—interventions that begin with restructuring policy-making and social order, proceed through cultural and media interactions, and ultimately lead to adolescents’ psychological and social empowerment.

1. Introduction
Hope for the future constitutes a vital psychological and social resource for young people, shaping their motivation, resilience, and capacity to contribute to society. In Iran, this issue has gained urgency as Generation Z adolescents (born in the early 2000s onward) face mounting social, economic, and cultural uncertainties. While individual-level correlates of hope—such as optimism or self-efficacy—are well documented, broader structural dimensions remain underexplored. The dominance of linear, reductionist models in the literature neglects the multidimensional and interactive processes through which hope is generated and sustained.
The necessity of a structural approach lies in recognizing that adolescents’ hope cannot be reduced to personal attributes alone; it is instead embedded in a dynamic social system shaped by macro-policies, cultural discourses, institutional environments, and family dynamics. Prior studies in psychology and sociology have emphasized the interplay between structural contexts and individual well-being, yet hope as a systemic phenomenon remains undertheorized.
The objective of this study is to bridge this gap by adopting structural analysis (MICMAC) as a methodological tool for mapping the complex network of causal interrelations influencing adolescents’ hope in Iran. By doing so, the study advances both the conceptualization of hope as a social construct and the development of actionable knowledge for policy-making. The urgency of this research stems from increasing reports of youth disengagement, mental health concerns, and emigration tendencies among Iranian adolescents—phenomena that threaten both individual trajectories and broader social cohesion.
The present research, therefore, not only addresses a theoretical lacuna but also carries practical implications for policy and cultural interventions aimed at empowering young people.

2. Materials and Methods
The research employed a three-stage process. First, a systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA framework, yielding 78 peer-reviewed studies on hope, youth development, and structural determinants. From these, 56 factors were extracted. Second, expert interviews were carried out with 17 professionals across sociology, psychology, and education to refine and validate the list of factors. Finally, 25 adolescents from urban Mashhad were interviewed to incorporate lived experiences of Generation Z into the framework. Altogether, 91 distinct factors were identified.
These factors were entered into a MICMAC analysis, where experts rated the degree of influence and dependency among variables. A cross-impact matrix was constructed, and direct as well as indirect relationships were computed using matrix multiplication. The MICMAC software then classified variables into four categories: 1) driving variables, 2) dependent variables, 3) linkage variables, and 4) autonomous variables.
Results indicated that policy-making, social anomie, and economic instability emerged as dominant drivers, with strong forward linkages but low dependency. In contrast, dependent outcomes included adolescents’ mental health, sense of worth, and social vitality. Linkage variables—such as the media lifeworld, social cohesion, and adolescent agency—functioned as mediating elements that transmitted the influence of macro-structures to micro-level outcomes.
The structural map produced illustrates a complex system in which adolescents’ hope is neither linear nor reducible to individual traits. Instead, it reflects an interplay between macro-structural forces, meso-level institutions, and micro-level psychological states.

3. Discussion & Analysis
The findings demonstrate that adolescents’ hope is embedded within a multilayered social system characterized by structural drivers and mediating pathways. Unlike prior studies that focused narrowly on individual attitudes, this study highlights the decisive role of macro-policies and systemic conditions. Policy-making, economic instability, and social anomie represent “structural levers” capable of shaping the trajectory of adolescents’ hope. This resonates with international research linking social structures to youth well-being.
Equally significant are the intermediary variables that bridge structural and individual domains. For instance, media life worlds not only reflect macro-discourses but also directly influence adolescents’ sense of agency, social connectedness, and outlook. Social cohesion and cultural transformations further mediate this process by either amplifying or mitigating systemic disruptions. The presence of such mediators underscores the importance of adopting multi-level interventions rather than focusing solely on individual counseling or psychological support.
These results also carry implications for theories of hope. Hope should be conceptualized not merely as an individual cognitive state but as a relational and systemic construct. Such a perspective aligns with sociological accounts of “collective hope” and systemic resilience. It also justifies methodological innovation: the MICMAC approach proved effective in uncovering both direct and indirect dynamics invisible to linear models.
From a policy perspective, strengthening adolescents’ hope requires simultaneous action on three levels: 1) reforming macro-policies to ensure stability and fairness; 2) fostering meso-level cohesion through educational and cultural institutions; and 3) empowering micro-level agency among adolescents. Without systemic reform at the top, interventions at the individual level will remain insufficient.

4. Conclusion
This study offers one of the first attempts to map the structural system influencing adolescents’ hope for the future in Iran. By integrating systematic review, expert input, and adolescent perspectives, it identified 91 factors and analyzed their interrelations through MICMAC. The results demonstrated that adolescents’ hope is a complex, multi-level phenomenon shaped primarily by macro-structural drivers—policy-making, economic stability, and social order—while mediated by meso-level cohesion and individual agency.
The research contributes theoretically by advancing a systemic perspective on hope that transcends individualistic models. Methodologically, it showcases the utility of MICMAC in analyzing social phenomena characterized by interdependence and feedback loops. Practically, it underscores the urgency of policy interventions aimed at stabilizing macro-structures and reinforcing social cohesion as preconditions for fostering adolescent hope.
Implications extend beyond the Iranian context. In societies undergoing rapid transformation, systemic approaches to youth hope and resilience may yield critical insights for both scholarship and policy. The findings call for cross-disciplinary collaboration—between sociology, psychology, education, and policy studies—to design interventions that address not only symptoms but also structural root causes.
In conclusion, fostering adolescents’ hope requires a holistic agenda that begins with structural reform, passes through cultural and media channels, and culminates in psychological and social empowerment. Without such systemic interventions, the challenge of declining hope among youth may persist, undermining both individual futures and collective social stability.
