During the nineteenth century, a combination of internal and external factors led to crisis, stagnation, and decline across Islamic societies. Recognizing these challenges, Sayyid Jamal al-Din Asadabadi initiated a reform movement aimed at overcoming this condition through a comprehensive set of interconnected objectives. Given the vast geographical scope of the Islamic world, as well as its cultural, social, economic, and political diversity and the presence of numerous ethnic and religious communities and sects, this study addresses the following questions: How did Sayyid Jamal al-Din’s reform movement emerge, develop, and expand? What were the mechanisms that facilitated its dissemination?
Drawing on the framework of historical sociology and employing the theories of charisma, elites, and the relationship between charismatic leadership and elites within Islamic societies, this study seeks to answer these questions and to propose a sociological model explaining the expansion of Sayyid Jamal al-Din’s reform movement and the mechanisms underlying its development. The research adopts the method of historical process analysis to examine the evolution of the reform movement and the ways in which its underlying mechanisms advanced its objectives.
The findings indicate that Sayyid Jamal al-Din’s reform movement followed a predominantly top-down trajectory. The proposed model further demonstrates that the movement progressed from charismatic leadership to elites and subsequently to the broader population of Islamic societies.
