This study aimed to explore the phenomenological dimensions of Iranian women’s political activism within the context of recent political events. It focused on the lived experiences of 21 women activists who actively participated in the 2022 protests and, in most cases, experienced arrest or imprisonment. Using Van Manen’s interpretive phenomenological approach, data collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews were analyzed to uncover the meanings embedded in women’s lived experiences of activism as reflected through language, body, memory, and space. Findings revealed that women’s political agency in Iran goes beyond a mere act of protest and represents an existential, ethical, and embodied experience. Participants defined activism not as a spontaneous reaction but as a deliberate and reflective way of being in the world—one in which the boundary between personal life and political existence becomes blurred. The phenomenological interpretation identified nine main themes and forty-five subthemes, including: existential perception of activism, mechanisms of repression and control, strategies of resistance, cultural and social capital, lived experience of imprisonment, political embodiment, women’s relation to law, vision of the future, and dynamics of collective solidarity. Overall, the study demonstrates that women’s political activism in Iran is deeply intertwined with suffering, awareness, and hope. It reflects a form of moral and embodied resistance in which the everyday lives of women become sites of political meaning and transformation.
