Representation of the social base of women in the popular cinema of Iran in the 60s

Abstract

Media is very important in today's world and has undeniable effects on society and social realities. One of these media is cinema, which has attracted many audiences in the field of popular film production.

Examining the importance of popular cinema is due to the fact that it accounts for two-thirds of the cinematographic products of each country. On the other hand, the representation of women in cinema has taken different forms in different political and social eras. Therefore, the purpose of the current research is to represent the social base of women in three popular films "The Renters", "Chrysanthemum Flowers" and "Courtship" from the 60s. The statistical population of this study is made up of all popular movies

which was produced in Iran from the 60s to the 70s. Three movies have been selected based on purposeful sampling and analyzed qualitatively using semiotics technique. The results of this study show that the women in these films are traditional rather than modern, and behave in accordance with the ideological propositions governing the society as well as based on gender stereotypes. In other words, the actions and reactions of men and women produce and reproduce the gender mechanism.
