Reasons, contexts and consequences of underage marriage from standpoint of married school girls

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to analyze causes, contexts and consequences of underage marriage from standpoint of married school girls. The conceptual framework of this research refers to the concepts and theories of modernization, feminist, ethnic-cultural, and modernity and postmodernity about family. The present research is qualitative (field) one. In this research, based on purposive and theoretical sampling methods, are selected 16 married female school girls in Sardrood section of Razan city as sample; the criterion of determining the sample size is theoretical saturation. Data are collected via open-ended questionnaires and in-depth individual interviews and analyzed with contextual analysis technique, according to which the causes, contexts and consequences of underage marriage are divided into 3 main categories, 7 sub-categories and 17 concepts.

The results of this research show that the married girls are considered “single risk”, “traditional criteria for marriage”, “competition”, “imitation”, “kinship marriage” and “Traditional beliefs” as reasons and “Divorce or Death of a Parent”, “mass media” and “violation of Child Marriage Law” as contexts of underage marriage. They have experienced the positive and negative effects of underage marriage with “early adulthood”, “loss of individual independence”, “dropping out”, “changing social relationships”, “promoting social status” and “paradoxical feelings of satisfaction and dissatisfaction with life”.
