Abstract
Women, due to the stigma that may be attached to them because of addiction, tend to distance themselves from society. This issue also affects women who have overcome addiction and returned to the community, leading to negative impacts. Consequently, the way that those around them and society respond to addicts influences their addiction conditions and the process of their recovery.
The present study aims to identify how society responds to women’s addiction. The study population consists of ordinary citizens from the provinces of Tehran and Alborz, with a total of 32 participants involved in the research. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The samples were selected purposefully, and the collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings are under 15 sub-themes and 6 main themes, which are as follows: The perception of addiction as a criminal issue; the denial, elimination, and concealment of women’s addiction; the notion that women’s addiction is more significant and different from that of men; the questioning of the mythologization of women’s roles in the family; the invisibility of the issue of addiction through dominant social discourse; and women’s addiction as form of promiscuity were categorized.
The findings indicate that the phenomenon of female addiction has generated considerable concern within society regarding its proliferation and the consequential effects it entails. Furthermore, this issue has captured the attention of policymakers and national planners. It has permeated the public spheres of a large segment of society, which is actively advocating for the alteration of existing conditions
